The Awans (have a unique distinction of being the only Punjabi tribe which) has No adherents of Hinduism or Sikhism and is a Totally Muslim tribe (which adds weight to their claim of Arabian ancestry.)

Many Awans, primarily from East Punjab, prefer writing Alvi or Alavis with their name to pronounce their ancestry from Imam Ali (A.S) ibn Talib, the son-in-law of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W.W).
